Name: John Sanocki
Year: Senior
Firm: Deloitte
Role: Tax Intern (Global Employer Services)
When/format: Winter/Spring 2020, Hybrid
Favorite memory: Getting coffee with the Global Employer Services tax team every week.
Typical day: Since my internship was during busy season, the day consisted of mostly tax returns assigned by seniors and some type of smaller assignment that usually involved preparing a Power of Attorney or organizing client-specific information in an Excel document.
What class do you think helped prepare you the most: ACC 201 & ITM 201
What is one thing you wish you knew before starting: I wish I had some prior experience with filling out a tax return and what a tax return is comprised of. Also, having general Excel skills is a necessity.

Name: Julia Ortiz
Year: Senior
Firm: KPMG
Role: Global Audit Intern
Location: I split my time between KPMG’s Chicago, IL office and the Auckland, New Zealand office
When/format: Winter 2020, in person
Industry: In Chicago I worked on financial services and real estate clients, then in Auckland I worked in their financial services group
Favorite Memory:
For Auckland: All of the social gatherings the Auckland office had while I was there were so memorable, it allowed me to meet so many people not only in audit but in different practices too. The boat cruise around the harbour of Auckland was probably my favorite!
For Chicago: I was part of the first group ever to go to training at KPMG’s new Lakehouse in Orlando, Florida and it was amazing! Individual guest rooms, complimentary food, state of the art training facilities, etc. Just amazing.
Typical day: Everyday was unique in those 3 months, but I mostly reported to my senior associate/in charge who gave me workpapers and projects to complete for the audit. In Chicago, I worked on 12/31 year-end clients so things were busy!
What classes helped to prepare you the most: Definitely ACC 300, I hadn’t yet taken ACC 301 or ACC 411 but those would have also been extremely useful.
What is one thing you wish you knew before starting: Don’t be afraid to ask questions and step outside of your comfort zone! I was so nervous at the beginning to ask questions because I didn’t want to seem like I didn’t know what was doing on, but asking questions to clarify a concept or simply for curiosity will enhance your understanding of what you are doing, and will show that you are engaged.

Name: Lauren Schneider
Year: Senior
Firm: Deloitte
Role: Audit and Assurance intern
When/ format: Summer 2020, virtual
Favorite memory: getting to meet and connect with Deloitte professionals from Detroit
Typical day: We spent the day from 9-5 on zoom and we would get breaks in between the zoom sessions. We got to learn from Deloitte professionals about the culture at Deloitte, their technologies and innovations, how to do a proposal, etc. We also did presentations on their technologies and we did a mock proposal.
What class do you think helped prepare you the most: ACC 300
What is one thing you wish you knew before starting: For zoom internships- find a place to work that is not distracting and that is clean/professional (use a background if needed).
